Depression is a disorder characterized by persistent low moods, lack of interest and loss of enjoyment in everyday activities, neurovegetative disturbance, and reduced energy. Depression often results in varying levels of increased social and work dysfunction. Depression disorders are common in people of all ages and are classified by the duration, severity and level of impact to a person’s functional impairment.
Anxiety is a normal part of life for almost everyone. However, if you have chronic anxiety or situational nervousness that is not appropriate to your current circumstances you may have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety Disorders affect more Americans than any other mental health disorder, but thankfully they are usually effectively treated with medicine and therapy.
Bipolar Disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health disorder that causes shifts in mood, energy, activity levels and your ability to function in day-to-day tasks. Bipolar Disorder can vary greatly in the severity of symptoms and is characterized by sudden changes in mood, or long periods of intense emotion. Proper diagnosis and treatment helps people with Bipolar Disorder live healthy, happy and productive lives.
Addiction is the habitual compulsion to engage in activities, or indulge in substances despite the devastating consequences on the individuals physical, emotional, mental and financial well being. Addiction offers a false refuge from the individuals pain and suffering and leads people down a self destructive and often deadly path. With proper recognition and treatment of the underlying issues many people turn their lives around and lead happy, healthy lives.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
Most people who go through traumatic events may have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping, but with time and good self-care, they usually get better. If the symptoms get worse, last for months or even years, and interfere with your day-to-day functioning, you may have PTSD.
Getting effective treatment after PTSD symptoms develop can be critical to reduce symptoms and improve function.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and often continues into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Children with ADHD also may struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school. Symptoms sometimes lessen with age. Some people never completely outgrow their ADHD symptoms, but they can learn strategies to be successful.
While treatment won't cure ADHD, it can help a great deal with symptoms. Treatment typically involves medications and behavioral interventions. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in outcome.
